Our West Hartford based school is home to a state of the art computer lab, individual student workspaces, offices for school administrators, teachers, counselors and psychologist.

Our philosophy.

As Connecticut’s first community-based special education school approved by the Department of Education, we believe that all students are unique and have something special they can bring to their own education. Through specially designed instruction, we meet the unique needs of our students.

Our program.

Our Program is designed for students 14 - 22 years old with challenging behaviors and other cognitive or developmental disabilities. We provide a combination of classroom instruction and community based activities that support post-secondary education, employment, life skills and independent living goals.

The goal of our accredited education program is to give each student a valuable education and integrative set of skills, preparing each for the next phase of their lives after high school.

Our Innovative Curriculum

  • Our robust Transition program provides instruction, and assists students and families in bridging the journey from school to postsecondary experience. As needed, our team helps students and families establish connections with outside agencies, links to college, job search support and independent living arrangements.

  • All of our students participate in multiple opportunities to participate in their community. Our school is located within a bustling neighborhood environment of public transportation, community services, public health and safety offices and other community resources. All student programs include scheduled opportunities to learn, understand and operationalize access to the rich and rewarding resources our community provides.

  • Our 6 Week Extended School Year (ESY) offers students the opportunity to continue to gain ground across the social, organizational and academic domains of their education. The summer program includes all instructional programs and activities offered during the regular school year. The program operates daily for students from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and transportation is provided.

  • Our Site Development coordinator, along with our Transition staff collaborate with the teaching staff and students to tailor meaningful employment for all students. On the job training, including one-to-one job coaching assistance is an integral component of this powerful experience for our students.

  • This program includes culinary instruction and training to empower students to complete daily living tasks in the kitchen independently. Tasks include: budgeting, meal planning, shopping, food and meal preparation and cleaning.

  • With the purchase of a new victorian building in Hartford, our students work alongside painters, electricians, contractors and more to learn the skills of various trades. Students are instructed on how to safely use tools and work with various building materials.

  • Set to launch in 2022. Our team will travel to various locations to provide therapeutic support to our consumers and students. This therapy can come in the form of grooming or playing with the dog, reading to her, or even just going for a walk. Animal Therapy has been a proven process to help with anxiety, self esteem and helping those who struggle with communication find a voice.

  • We use technology as a tool for education and empowerment. In our state of the art tech lab, we have invested in both Mac and PC computers and programs, 3D printers, Cricut and more, as tools to help students learn everything from technical skills to critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication and collaboration.

  • We take field trips and exploration days throughout the school year. It is one of the best tools that we can use to provide every student with real-world experiences. Whether it’s a trip to the local grocery store, waterfront park, a library, museum, theater, community garden or a restaurant, each experience contributes to a students’ understanding of the world.

  • This comprehensive andargeted program focuses on the life long skills related to baking an array of delicious foods. Across the spectrum of recipe choice, preparation, baking, table presentation and serving, our students experience a deep dive into the joys of cooking baked treats.

  • Working with an experienced faculty that shares the students interests, we encourage students to participate in our enrichment programs including visual and media arts, music and photography.
